SWAHILI (also known as Kiswahili or kiSwahili) is one of the most popular languages spoken on the East Coast of Africa from Lamu Island, Kenya, in the north to the southern border of Tanzania in the south. Swahili speakers span over 14 countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Comoros, and as far as Oman and Yemen in the Middle East. The language is predominately a blend of local Bantu languages and Arabic, resulting from decades of trade and cultural mingling along the East African coast. In fact, the word “Swahili” comes from the Arabic word “sawāḥilī” – the plural adjective for “of the coast”. Besides Arabic and Bantu, Swahili also has English, Persian, Portuguese, German and French influences / loan words, again due to trade contact.
