Online Learning Glossary
Key Terms Every Learner Should Know
As online learning continues to grow, especially across schools, families, and community education, it’s important to understand the key terms used in digital learning environments.
At The School of African Languages (SOAL), we believe that making learning accessible starts with making it understandable. This glossary is designed to help students, parents, and educators feel more confident when navigating online learning.
💻 Essential Online Learning Terms
E-Learning
Learning that takes place using digital platforms or the internet. This can include videos, live lessons, or interactive activities.
Virtual Classroom
An online space where teachers and students interact in real time, similar to a traditional classroom but accessed through a device.
Blended Learning
A combination of in-person teaching and online learning, giving learners flexibility while maintaining structure.
Asynchronous Learning
Learning that does not happen live. Students can access materials such as videos or worksheets at their own pace.
Synchronous Learning
Live, real-time learning where students and teachers interact at the same time, often through video calls.
Learning Management System (LMS)
A platform used to organise and deliver learning content. Examples include systems where students access lessons, submit work, and receive feedback.
Interactive Learning
Learning that involves active participation, such as quizzes, games, discussions, or group activities.
Digital Literacy
The ability to use technology effectively and responsibly for learning, communication, and problem-solving.
Gamification
Using game elements (such as points, levels, or rewards) to make learning more engaging and motivating.
Remote Learning
Learning that takes place outside of a traditional classroom, often from home, using online tools.
Why This Matters
Understanding these terms helps learners and families feel more confident and prepared. It also supports schools in creating more inclusive and effective learning environments, where everyone can engage fully, regardless of their starting point.
At SOAL, we use many of these approaches in our workshops and online sessions to ensure learning is engaging, accessible, and meaningful.
Final Thought
Online learning is not just about technology, it’s about connection, creativity, and opportunity.
The more we understand the language of learning, the more empowered we become.
